How to take a self portrait
The foundation of my practice is self portraiture. I took my first one age 10 as soon as I got my first camera. I dressed up in a cowboy hat and sunglasses and took a picture of myself in the mirror. I have no idea why. It was not something that my mother or father had done before me, it was not part of the family albums before this. Had I seen any other self portraits in mirrors? I am not sure I had. But it is the easiest way to take a self portrait. Or at least it was before we got our smart phones. I have now taken 1000s of pictures of myself in many different ways with varied results.
This letter is my guide to self portraiture.
